I thought I would post some of the studies that show the positive and controversial results that have been obtained following the Dean Ornish Diet and lifestyle approach to living.

Prostate Cancer Genes Alter on Ornish Diet

A study from the Preventive Medicine Research Institute in Sausalito, California of men with prostate cancer who had refused traditional treatment resulted in a change in 500 genes. The result were achieved in 3 months and confirmed by needle biopsies.

Heart Healthy Study

A Dr. Ornish study at theUniversity of California San Francisco School of Medicine in 1990 studied 28 patients on the Dean Ornish Diet and 20 on a standard low fat diet. Those who followed the Ornish Diet showed regression of coronary atherosclerosis, while those on a conventional diet had their coronary atherosclerosis progress.

Atkins vs Ornish

A controversial study completed in 2007 at Stanford University School of Medicine however showed that women on Atkins for a year outperformed those on the Ornish diet. The women on Atkins showed greater weight loss and better over all health. Ornish disagreed with this study saying that more participants were unable to follow his low fat diet and that the studies conclusions for their research was wrong.

Alternate Healthy Eating Index

University of Massachusetts Medical School

1. Ornish (64.6);

2. Weight Watchers High Carbohydrate (57.4);

3. New Glucose Revolution (57.2);

4. South Beach/Phase 2 (50.7);

5. Zone (49.8);

6. 2005 USDA Food Guide Pyramid (48.7);

7.Weight Watchers High Protein (47.3);

8. Atkins/100g Carb (46);

9. South Beach/Phase 3 (45.6) and

10. Atkins/45g Carb (42.3).

Dean Ornish Diet, Is It For You?

The Dean Ornish diet plan became popular among heart patients for reversing heart disease. The Ornish diet is not just a diet but requires a complete lifestyle change. The plan includes meditation and exercise. The Dean Ornish diet is at the opposite end of the spectrum of the Atkins diet plan.

The diet does not really stress the amount of food you eat but rather the type of food. It is a low fat vegetarian diet plan. Basically you can eat all the vegetables you want with very limited amounts of non fat dairy and egg whites. Complex carbs are also okay and whole grains but no refined sugar, alcohol or junk foods are allowed. Less than 10% of your calories should come from fat, 20% protein and 70% carbs. Dr Ornish’s book is a must if you plan on following the Dean Ornish diet plan as it is filled with excellent recipes to keep you with in his guidelines.

Unlike Dr. Atkins plan the Dean Ornish diet gets positive feedback from most in the medical community. Limited studies have shown overall health benefits of his plan. No Dean Ornish diet review would be complete without mentioning stress management using meditation and exercise.

Typical Day on The Dean Ornish Diet Plan

Breakfast

Oatmeal cereal with raisins and skim milk

1/2 Grapefruit

Green Teat

Lunch

Soup (tomato, lentil or other)

Garden Salad

Bread

Fresh Fruit

Dinner

The Ornish diet includes some terrific pasta dishes for dinner like Eggplant Lasagna

Hits: This might be the perfect diet for the human body. Its a complete plan of living not just a diet.Misses: This is not at all a easy diet for the average person to stick to and one of the most restrictive.
